He is also survived by his siblings Raymond Farrell and his wife, Susan, Noreen Hickey and her partner, Peter Doncourt, and Steven Farrell and his wife, Jeanmarie. There are still many living nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Before he did, his sister Gigi Carey passed away.
Dennis was born on November 11, 1948, in Manhattan. He was the son of the late Raymond Farrell and Vera (Feldscher). He went to several colleges in the greater New York City area, and in 1966, he graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, New York.
At the age of 17, with the backing of his parents and James by his side, Dennis enlisted in the Navy. He served two tours of service as a firefighter and damage controlman on the aircraft carrier Intrepid during the Vietnam War. He celebrated his first equatorial crossing, as well as traveling through the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope, with his shipmates. Now, a marine museum in New York Harbor is home to Dennis’ ship, the Intrepid.
After leaving the Navy, Dennis enrolled at Manhattan Community College and initially concentrated on a college-level EMT program before transferring to nursing. He finished his nursing study at MCC, a part of the City University of New York, and received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Adelphi University. When he reenlisted, he decided to serve in the Army, where he has since established a career. Throughout his years of service, he obtained two master’s degrees at the University of Pennsylvania and the Wharton School: one in business administration and one in nursing.
