Gary Mayer Obituary, Death – Gary Alan Mayer of LaGrange, Georgia died peacefully April 29,2023. John and Ruth(Mintie) Mayer’s only child, he was born in Cleveland, Ohio, September 7, 1946. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball at Valley Forge High School. He earned BAs in accounting and economics from Ohio University. Delta Sigma Pi Professional Business Fraternity and a full baseball scholarship were his. MBA in Finance from Cleveland State University.
He played semi-pro weekend baseball in graduate school. Gary lived to help others. He proudly served the US Army in Vietnam. He joined Ohio Bell after the army and advanced swiftly. He retired as an ATT Lucent Technologies top manager. He volunteered with Telephone Pioneers. He was Solon Jaycees President and July 4th Fireworks Chairman. He started the family-friendly Santa’s Workshop. He did this every year till Christmas. An Outstanding Young Man of America was an honor.
Gary dedicated his adult life to the American Cancer Society. North Metro Atlanta chapter president and National ACS board member. For many years, his family sponsored the North Fulton Tennis Classic Tournament, a major cancer research fundraiser. He was an Elder at Pioneer Memorial in Solon, Oh, Barrington Hills in Chicago, Ill, St Luke’s in Dunwoody, Ga, and First Pres in LaGrange, Ga. He was active in church youth organizations, Sunday School, New Members, Soup Kitchen, and more.
Gary enjoyed music. He was President and Treasurer of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra for over 20 years. He worked to expand the Orchestra and youth music program. His huge smile, friendliness, and willingness to serve will be remembered. He took his family on several wonderful international vacations. His 54-year-old college girlfriend Marilyn Laverne (Phillian) Mayer survives him.
