Laurie Mumford Obituary, Death – I hate to inform you of the passing of Laurie Mumford, who passed away on May 22, 2023, at the age of 92. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Laurie complained of pain. She was hospitalized on Sunday and sadly passed away in the wee hours of Monday night. After joining the team in 1959 at the request of his late boss, the late Eric Dodkins, to fill in for a few games, Laurie became a legend at Romford Hockey Club.
On Saturday, October 25, 2014, he played his last game at the age of 83, capping a 55-year playing career. On that particular day, the opposition was an East London team led by Roger Lillystone, a native of Romford. Romford’s 1-0 victory against the opponent gave Laurie a winning finish to his playing career.
Laurie held a variety of responsibilities at Romford Hockey Club throughout the course of his 64 years there, including those of president, treasurer, captain, and main club spokesman. He continued to serve as President after he stopped playing, an honorary position he was given in 1994 and one he kept for 29 years. Additionally, he stayed in his position as Romford Hockey Club Treasurer, sticking with pen and paper and defying modern technology.
Although a gentleman off the field, he was the club’s treasurer and would pursue you if you owed the organization money. He continued to be a devoted fan of the squad all the way through the 2023 campaign, regularly showing out to watch on Saturdays before stopping by the clubhouse for half of a bitter shandy.
