Martha Temple Obituary, Death – Martha died away quietly on her birthday, May 17th, 2023, with her only child, Gordon Schmierer Jr., and her sister and best friend, Ann Temple Frank, by her side. Martha was born on May 17th, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, and she passed away on her birthday, May 17th, 2023. Her parents were Dorothy Torrence Temple and Robert Tannehill Temple, and she had three siblings named Bob, Ann, and Bill.
Her paternal grandparents were Dorothy Torrence and Robert Tannehill. Martha moved away from Ohio in 1958 to attend the University of Chicago, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962, a Master of Arts degree in 1966 focusing on Art History, and a second Master of Arts degree in 1977 centered on Social Thought. She continued at the University of Chicago as a university administrator and teacher in her twenties.
At the University of Chicago, she met Gordon Schmierer Sr., and the two of them went on to get married and live in Chicago until they divorced in 1982. Martha was in her forties when she started working at Illinois Bell, which supported her master’s degree in business administration at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Martha relocated to San Francisco, where she found work in the information technology field.
She later rejoined AT&T, which transferred her to New Jersey, first in the capacity of a negotiator for outsourcing contracts and later as an internal consultant for Bell Labs. Martha took the severance money offered to her when the Bell System was broken up in the 1990s and used it to pay her tuition at the Gestalt Institute in Cleveland. Martha completed a doctoral program in clinical psychology at Rutgers university after deciding in her mid-50s “what she wanted to be when she grew up.”
Martha is now a licensed clinical psychologist. After working in care settings run by the government, Martha went on to establish a private practice in which she specialized in individual and couples counseling. She stopped working in 2019 and relocated to Dayton, Ohio, which is where many of her cousins on her mother’s side live.
