Yvonne Carberry Walters Obituary, Death – The news of the demise of Yvonne Carberry Walters, a colleague of mine at the Jamaica Tourist Board who was always full of life, kind, and compassionate, reached me this morning, and it has left me in a state of profound grief. Yvonne, a beloved member of the St. Hugh’s High School swan community, was a devout Catholic who devoted her life to the tourism industry and her cherished family and extended families.
When she was in charge of the JTB unit at the Norman Manley Airport, she employed many young people over the years, and if any of those employees advanced their careers and achieved success, she felt an immense sense of pride for them. Her life revolved on the Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Liguanea, where she faithfully served as a member of the congregation for a number of years.
Yvonne was such a devoted person that when Donna Haynes passed away a few months ago, even though she wasn’t feeling 100%, she forced herself to attend Donna’s celebration of life, where she fainted after the service. This demonstrated how much Yvonne cared about Donna. After being taken to UWI Hospital, she was given a second chance at life the next day.
Yvonne’s husband Wally, who worked for Customs and Immigration, passed away before she did. She courageously waged a battle with cancer, and she is now at rest now that the fight is over. We will certainly miss her upbeat attitude, her bright smile, and the words of encouragement that she has shared with us in the past. Sleep peacefully, darling Yvonne. You were aware that many people from many different walks of life loved you in abundance. My deepest condolences go out to both of your sons and to all of your grandchildren.
